Landing your first HGV Job as a Newly Qualified Driver

With the huge demand for HGV drivers massively exceeding supply, newly qualified drivers will see that there are many well paid opportunities available once qualified.

So how do you stand out from all the other applicants that apply for a HGV job?

Attitude above all, you could have the best skills and recommendations on paper however if you don’t have an open and positive attitude, the employer is unlikely to give you an opportunity. A good attitude shows a willingness to go the extra mile and do what is needed to complete your job, employers highly value this (sometimes even over experience).

Don’t be afraid tospeak up, don’t just sit there saying the bare minimum.Sit up straight and tell them what you’ve been doing in the past and why that makes you suitable for the job role. Sell yourself without overexaggerating but equally don’t downgrade yourself, tell them all the good things about yourself and how they are going to benefit greatly from hiring you.

The early bird catches the worm; In this case, the punctual driver gets the job. When you go in for your interview, ensure you arrive at least 10-15 minutes early which allows you to get comfortable and set yourself up for success. Also, it pays to go the extra mile and do background research on the company, spend some time on their website and know some facts about the company. You will be surprised how few people do this and how much if done right this will impress your future boss
